How To - UNIX Basics
- Some tips:
- UNIX userid's, passwords, commands and filenames are case
sensitive, which means the name 'makefile' and 'Makefile' are
different files.
- When you telnet into the suns you will be presented with a MOTD
(Message Of The Day). This is where I'll announce changes to the Sun
lab. You can check the MOTD at any time by typing motd at the
your UNIX prompt.

- The Top 10 Most frequently used UNIX commands:
- ls -
list directories.
cd - change directories.
cat - display the contents of a file.
more - pause for "more?" at the end of a screen full of text.
lp - print a file.
chmod - change access rights (owner, group, and world) of a file.
mkdir - create a directory.
rm - remove a file or directory.
cp - copy file
man - online manual pages for UNIX commands.
